John O'Shea the hero as Ireland hold Germany in Gelsenkirchen

John O'Shea marked his 100th cap with a famous equaliser in Gelsenkirchen as the Boys in Green earned a late draw against Germany in their Euro 2016 qualifier.

The defender deftly nudged in Jeff Hendrick's centre in injury time to make it 1 - 1 against the 2014 World Cup winners.

The result leaves Ireland joint top of Group D.

A second half goal from Toni Kroos had put Germany in control.

The World Cup winners, who dominated possession, had to wait until the 70th minute for the Real Madrid midfielder to find space at the edge of the box and fire in what looked like a winner.

Erik Durm had Germany's best chance of a first half which saw Ireland fail to test Manuel Neuer. But he saw his long-range strike cannon off the crossbar.

Jogi Loew's side continued to pile on the pressure but did not capitalise on their dominance of the ball until midway through the second half.

Kroos found himself in space just outside the box before firing in a shot which went off the inside of David Forde's post and into the goal.

Substitute Wes Hoolahan had Ireland's best chance of the match as the Boys in Green pushed for an equaliser but his shot was well blocked.

But there was still time for John O'Shea to get an all-important goal.
