Klopp effect fails to make instant impact

Liverpool have claimed their first point of Jurgen Klopp's Anfield reign, after a tedious scoreless draw at White Hart Lane.

The build up to the game carried an air of anticipation and excitement as fans and pundits alike were eager to see how Liverpool would perform under the recently installed German boss, but it proved anti-climatic as both sides failed to find any rhythm.

In fact, Klopp will be thanking his Belgian goalkeeper after Simon Mignolet produced a string of impressive saves to keep his goal intact.

The Reds started the brighter and it looked like the Klopp effect had an immediate impact, as they pressed high up the field and won the ball back in the opposition a number of times.

They were nearly rewarded for their bright start in the 10th minute when Dicock Origi headed against the crossbar from close range, before failing to control the rebound as Spurs survived.

Origi's chance elicited this response from his new boss

That was to be as close as Liverpool would come to scoring, as Spurs grew into the game and began to control proceedings. Clinton Njie drew the first world class save from Mignolet, as the Cameroonian's strike with the outside of the boot looked destined to hit the net only for Liverpool 'keepers intervention.

Spurs were in the ascendency at this point and Christian Eriksen's influence began to grow, as the Dane fed a ball through to Harry Kane but the English strikers luckless bout in front of goal continued as he drilled it straight at Mignolet, before Delle Alli's follow up was brilliantly blocked by Mamadou Sakho.

The second half saw little improvement, with little attacking penetration from either side. The best chance of the half came late on as Mignolet produced another top save to deny Kane once again after good work down the left from Eriksen as Spurs went in search for the winner.

In the end they had to settle for a share of the spoils as both sides indifferent starts to the season continue.
