LISTEN: O Fearghail open to changing qualifiers

New GAA President Aogán Ó Fearghail is open to altering the qualifier system - if a suitable proposal to improve the current structures can be found.

Speaking to Newstalk's Oisin Langan at this weekend's Congress, Cavan's first Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael said he wouldn't be setting himself any time-based targets, but that he would be open to evolution in the traditional competition structures.

When asked by Oisin what are his immediate goals over the next couple of months, Ó Fearghail said: "Just to sustain it ... I wouldn't be putting a calendar or a timetable of what we hope to achieve in a couple of months because the GAA doesn't work that way."I'm not going to to tie myself to calendar and see at the end of the month 'was that done?' and tick a box because we don't tick boxes in the GAA, we just play our games and we promote everything we do."

As for those qualifier structure, the Drumgoon clubman added: "There are always areas for improvement. [GAA Director General] Paraic Duffy has been saying this in his report for many, many years.

"The provincial championship structure is strong. People enjoy it, but ... if we can see better proposals, if we can see ways to improve it, we'll do that."
