Lance Armstrong: 'For the first time in a couple of years I have watched the race'

Lance Armstrong has returned to the roads of France to take part in a charity cycle.

The cyclist last competed in the Tour de France in 2010 and returns to the country for the first time since he was banned from the sport.

The American is taking part in the One Day Ahead charity event which sees cyclists cycle the whole Tour de France route a day before the peleton. Armstrong committed to riding some of the stages after meeting former footballer Geoff Thomas, who founded the event.

Speaking to the press before he took to the bike, Armstrong said that Chris Froome has "been smart" avoiding all the crashes in the opening week. He also called Froome's lead over the rest of the pack as "impressive", while adding his support to American team mate Tejay van Garderen who lies in second place.
