Liverpool have 'areas of concerns' ... and potentially a surprise starter

According to Liverpool's chief executive Ian Ayre, Brendan Rodgers has done all the business he wanted to do ahead of the new Premier League season.

The likes of Christian Benteke, Nathaniel Clyne, James Milner and Roberto Firmino have been brought in as the Reds look to bounce back from a terrible 2014-15 but as The Times' Merseyside correspondent Tony Barrett told Off The Ball tonight, there are plenty of areas that need addressing even though they are stronger.

"I think the once concern would be that there may be areas of Brendan Rodgers's squad that haven't been addressed - mainly the defence. I think also in central midfield, Liverpool could do with someone, maybe a bit more of a destroyer to come in and give them a bit more help in that area. Also, in the goalkeeping position, although Simon Mignolet did particularly well last year in the second half at least, I think Liverpool could have done with a bit better there than what they've got. So there are areas of concern," he said, adding that Roberto Firmino appears to be setting in well.

As for starters among the new signings, Barrett picked out Clyne, Milner and the surprising choice of teenage defender Joe Gomez (18) as likely first choice options as the season unfolds.
