"It wasn't ideal" - Dublin star Michael Darragh Macauley assesses his season

Dublin star Michael Darragh Macauley says it would have been a huge waste if this Ballyboden team did not win the Dublin championship.

The All-Ireland winning footballer was part of the team that beat reigning champions St Vincent's in the Dublin senior football final at the weekend.

Speaking to Off The Ball's Dave McIntyre tonight, Macauley said: "There's a really nice balance here, that's why really this year we wanted to make a big push on it because I really thought that if we didn't win the championship, it would have been a huge waste. The way it worked out was great."

As for making a mark in this year's All-Ireland Club Championship, Macauley added that Ballyboden have learned plenty from the 2009 campaign when they fell to defeat against Garrycastle.

"We definitely can't be looking at St Paddy's Day yet. We're looking at St Pat's on Sunday and that's going to be the next step of it."

He also reflected on his 2015 inter-county experiences, admitting that starting from the bench on occasion was "frustrating".

"It wasn't ideal. I'd prefer to be starting every game but it was kind of funny the way it worked out with injuries and stuff. I probably didn't hit my top form until later on in the season this year and obviously I'm a lot happier on the pitch than I am on the bench. I think that's the way all players should be. It was frustrating but you have to play these things out. The county medal yesterday put a serious cherry on top of the year."
