Mayo edge Galway in Pearse Stadium

Mayo kept their drive for five alive after battling to victory over Galway in a thriller in Pearse Stadium this afternoon.

Mayo had the better of the opening exchanges building up a three point lead early on but Galway soon grew into the game hitting a purple patch of their own drawing the sides level  after twenty minutes in what was an open and entertaining game of football.

Mayo regained the lead but Galway broke down the pitch and Gary Sice scored an early goal of the championship contender to give the Tribesmen a one point lead coming to the end of the half.

Just on the close of the half the ever impressive Cillian O’ Connor drew the sides level with his sixth point of the game.

Mayo got the perfect start to the second with an early point. Mayo built on that with a bombarding run by Aidan O’Shea, which seen the all ripped from his hands, but a mix up in the Galway defence led goalkeeper Manus Breathnach kicking the ball off one his own player and rebounding into the back of the net.

Mayo opened up a four point lead and Galway could never recover with Mayo slowly opening up a six point lead. There was some hope for Galway half way through the second half as a good team move seen Danny Cummins finishing into the back of the net but Galway could not push on.

Both sides exchanged scores in the closing minutes with Mayo closing out the game and recording a 1-15 to 2-08 victory
