McAllister on Gerrard: 'I think it's time for a change'

As part of the Off the Ball Roadshow in Vicar St tonight, Joe and Colm were joined on stage by Liverpool hero Gary McAllister thanks to Carlsberg's Join The Greats campaign.

The 35 year old joined Liverpool under Gerard Houllier when he was 35 years old for a two year spell.

He spoke to Joe and Colm about how the reaction to his Liverpool signing by the local press inspired him on to such a successful spell at Anfield.

The Scot gave praise to Robbie Keane and mentioned how his partnership with the Irish striker at Coventry may have helped get his move to Liverpool.

McAllister admitted he moved to Coventry solely for the money, but moving to Liverpool was made very easy because he "wanted to play for Liverpool".

The younger generation of Gerrard, Carragher and Owen were used as "an inspiration" by McAllister who claimed on stage that playing with players of that calibre motivated the Scot to win more trophies.

His famous 44 yard free kick against Everton was mentioned by Joe and Colm to the midfielder and he explained how he got the ball past Paul Gerrard with the help of a "dummy run"

He was part of the famous side that won the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup in the same season and spoke about the heartbreak of not starting in the FA Cup final to the euphoria of winning the UEFA Cup as man of the match.

The midfielder speaks about his memories of the UEFA Cup final in Dortmund and his recollection of a object thrown from the crowd at Robbie Fowler.

"What a waste of money" was the chant from The Kop on McAliister's last day in a Liverpool jersey. He speaks about his uniquerelationship with the fans and the pressure of not disappointing the clubs Scottish heritage.

Listen to Gary McAllister speak about his late career resurgence at Liverpool FC:
