Michael Bisping: Daniel Cormier cheated

UFC light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier successfully defended his championship belt with a second round submission of Anthony Johnson at UFC 210 at the weekend.

However there was controversy leading up to the fight when Cormier missed weight on Friday only to take the scales again minutes later to make the 205 lbs limit. At his second attempt, Cormier appeared to lean on the towel which has held in front of him - an incident which has been dubbed "towelgate".

UFC Middleweight champion Michael Bisping was speaking on the Believe You Me podcast about the incident and said: "I guess the top and bottom of it, and this is no disrespect to Daniel Cormier but you'll hear my opinion on this but the top and bottom of it is that he cheated, he cheated at the weigh in simple as that.

"But, the commission allowed him to do it. For people who don't understand what happened - he came in like 1.2 lbs over and then he immediately got back on the scale. He did the towel - the idea there is that the towel covers your privates while you take your underpants off and try to be a bit lighter but he immediately got back on the scale and he was 1.2 lbs lighter."

Bisping went on to explain that Cormier used the tension from the towel to support help him make the championship limit saying: "He was supporting 1.2lbs of his weight. Now the commission, the New York commission because it's new to MMA, not new to boxing curiously enough so it's not like they're new to combat sports and weigh-ins which they are not, they're very experienced. But still they let it slide and good for Daniel Cormier. He tried it. He got away with it, it's not his fault."
