Monaghan have ability to bridge gap to elite counties - Brendan Devenney

Ex-Donegal forward Brendan Devenney believes Monaghan can bridge the gap to the top counties in the country.

Devenney was at yesterday's Ulster championship semi-final between Monaghan and Donegal and as well as talking tactics, he also gave his take on the 2013 Ulster champions' development on Off The Ball.

"For me Donegal are in and around the Top 3 teams in Ireland. Monaghan are probably in and around six or seven. So can they bridge that gap? They've definitely got the ability to do it," he said.

Devenney also believes Kieran Hughes will be the key man, especially if Donegal are the team they end up meeting in the Ulster final.

"Obviously, Conor McManus is much talked about. He's one of the best forwards and can do practically anything in the game. But I think the likes of Kieran Hughes, we don't hear much about. He'd remind you of a young Tommy Dowd. He's a very powerful guy. He takes the ball and he's very direct. I think that's a big thing for Monaghan going forward because Neil McGee can take players out of the game and if it is Donegal [in the final], it will be difficult for McManus. Hughes is the person, I think, who they can look to with the diagonal ball."
