GAELIC GAMES

Some heavyweight contenders for the Sam Maguire see action this afternoon.

Chief among them, Kerry begin the defence of their Munster and All-Ireland crowns with a provincial semi-final against Tipperary.

Throw-in at Semple Stadium for that one is at 3.30pm.

The other Munster semi-final is underway at the same time, and sees Cork play host to Clare at Páirc Uí Rinn.

A place in the Connacht Football final awaits the winners of today's heavyweight tussle at Pearse Stadium.

Defending provincial champions Mayo take on Galway, with the Tribesmen hoping to arrest a recent poor record against their neighbours.

Last year's Connacht final saw Galway concede three goals, while the year before at the same venue there were 17 points between the sides.

That match throws in at 4pm.

There are two more Leinster quarter-finals down for decision this afternoon.

Páirc Tailteann in Navan hosts its first provincial Championship clash in two decades as an injury-ravaged Meath play host to Wicklow.

Cusack Park in Mullingar is the stage for Westmeath and Wexford.

Both of those games have 3.30pm starts.

Meanwhile, Rory Gallagher has drafted Anthony Thompson into the Donegal defence for their Ulster quarter final with Armagh.

Derry await the winners of that one in the semi-finals, and throw-in at the Athletic Grounds is at 2pm.

In hurling, Mayo and Roscommon meet in the Christy Ring Cup promotion-relegation playoff.

That game serves as the aperitif to the Connacht football final at Pearse Stadium, with throw-in at 1.45pm.

SOCCER

After Ireland and Scotland's Euro 2016 qualifier draw in Group D yesterday, it's the turn of England this evening and they can take another step towards qualification.

Roy Hodgson's side are away to Group E's third-placed side Slovenia.

Elsewhere in that group, Estonia take on San Marino, and Switzerland travel to Lithuania.

Brazil open up their Copa America account tonight. They face Peru in Group C, with that game kicking off at 10.30pm Irish time.

Elsewhere in the group, Colombia take on Venezuela.

GOLF

Gregory Bourdy is on course for victory on the final day of the Lyoness Open in Austria.

He is 15-under par, two clear of today's playing partner Rafa Cabrera Bello of Spain.

Peter Lawrie starts the final round best of the Irish on 3-under par.

OTHER

It's a busy day for Irish athletes at the European Games in Baku.

Both Aaron O'Brien and Russell White take part in the men's triathlon.

Galway's Karen Dolphin has also been in action in pool A of the women's karate elimination round.

Six gymnasts partake in their respective artistic qualification subdivisions.

Kieran Behan, Rohan Sebastian and Daniel Fox are in the mens competition, while Nicole Mawhinney, Tara Donnelly and Éilis O'Reilly compete in the women's event.

Jennifer Egan goes in the 500-metre heats of the women's K-1 kayak event.

There is also an early start for Peter Egan and Simas Dobrovolskis in the heats of the men's 1000-metres K-2 doubles.

RACING

Over €48K is on offer to the winner of the Munster Oaks Stakes, the highlight of a seven-race card at Cork this afternoon.

The first there is off at 2.25pm.

Meanwhile, they also go at Downpatrick where action is underway at 2.40pm.
