SOCCER

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard accused Mario Balotelli of showing "disrespect", after the Italian took a penalty instead of Jordan Henderson in the Europa League last night.

The striker scored it to give them a 1-0 win over Besiktas in their last-32 first leg.

Gerrard was working as a TV pundit and said Henderson was down to take spot-kicks and that "rules are rules".

Manager Brendan Rodgers, however, wasn't willing to discuss his skipper's comments.

Elsewhere last night, a 94th minute strike from John Guidetti saw Celtic salvage a 3-3 draw with Inter Milan at Parkhead.

Tottenham drew one-all with Fiorentina, while Romelu Lukaku netted a hat-trick in Everton's 4-1 win away to Young Boys of Bern.

GOLF

Padraig Harrington is five off the lead on one under, after an opening round of 70 at the Northern Trust Open in California.

Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen are among a group of six leading the way on five-under par.

Peter Lawrie has carded a 70, and is in the clubhouse on three-under at the Indian Open in Delhi.

Gareth Maybin is out on course on 1-over, while Kevin Phelan will start his second round from two-over.

Currently leading the way there is Sidikkur Rahman on seven-under, one clear of a group of three.

Rounding off the week in which he announced his retirement, Shane Jennings will captain Leinster at home to bottom side Zebre in the Pro 12 tonight.

Iain Henderson starts for Ulster as they make the trip to Edinburgh.

Both of those games kick off at 7.35.

While at 7.05, Treviso entertain Cardiff Blues.

CRICKET

England have suffered a demoralising defeat at the World Cup.

They've been beaten by New Zealand by eight wickets in Wellington, with the Kiwis surpassing their paltry target of 124 with nearly 38 overs to spare.

Dubliner Eoin Morgan's poor form with the bat continued - he was out for just 17.

CYCLING

After the disappointment of his 10th place finish in the men's Scratch race last night, Ireland's Martyn Irvine will be back in action today at the Track Cycling World Championships in France.

Irvine will be starting his challenge in the men's Omnium event.

There's action on the all-weather track at Dundalk this evening, where the first of seven races is off at 6.05.
