Newcastle pretty much confirm Rob Elliott's Euro 2016 absence for Ireland

Newcastle have confirmed that Irish goalkeeper Rob Elliot is facing "a number of months" on the sidelines.

The 29-year-old is reportedly facing a six month lay-off after he was stretchered off after just 16 minutes of Ireland's 2-2 friendly draw against Slovakia last night.

Newcastle have now revealed that Elliot has sustained an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament.

The club say that the severity of the injury means that the player will be out for a number of months.

"Newcastle United can confirm that goalkeeper Rob Elliot has sustained an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament, suffered during the Republic of Ireland's friendly fixture against Slovakia last night. Rob has returned to Newcastle and has been assessed this morning by the Club's doctor. He will now commence a programme of treatment and rehabilitation. Regrettably, the severity of this injury will rule Rob out for a number of months. Everyone connected with Newcastle United wishes Rob the very best for his recovery," the club said in a statement.
