Niall Quinn puts Robbie Keane's extraordinary goalscoring record into perspective

Former Ireland striker Niall Quinn feels Robbie Keane's goalscoring record at international level is even more impressive when you put it into context.

Quinn, who scored 21 goals in the green jersey, partnered Keane up front earlier in the 36-year-old's career.

He was reacting to the news that the Los Angeles Galaxy forward will retire from Ireland duty after the August 31st friendly against Oman at Aviva Stadium.

Keane scored 67 goals for Ireland to put himself fifth on the all-time list of European goalscorers at international level.

"To score the amount of goals he has, just look back in England and the great England players like Bobby Charlton, Gary Lineker, Wayne Rooney... it surpasses that and also to be fair to Robbie, we weren't quite as successful as the likes of Bobby Charlton's teams were," Quinn told Sky Sports News.

Speaking to Newstalk last month, Quinn had also spoken about appreciating Keane and his achievements.

"He was never under-praised in our house, put it that way. I always knew the value of Robbie Keane and he extended my Ireland career for a few years towards the end of my time, going into the squad at such a young age," he said at the time.
