PROFILE: Who is the ex-IAAF president under investigation over corruption charges?

Earlier today, it was revealed that former International Association of Athletics Federations president Lamine Diack has been questioned by French police as part of an investigation into allegations of corruption related to an alleged cover-up of doping by Russian athletes. But what do we know about the man who left the presidential role this year?

Diack, who was born in the Senegalese capital of Dakar in 1933, was an athlete in his own right in his 20s.

A former long jumper, he won the event at the French Athletics Championships of 1958 with a jump of 7 metres 63.

He was also a keen footballer, lining out for the Foyer France Sénégal club, later coaching the team in the late 1960s.

Between 1964 and 1968, he also served as the technical director of the Senegal national football team.

His involvement on a more global scale in athletics began after he became president of his home country's national Olympic committee in 1985 - a role he held until 2002.

By that time, he had already become president of the IAAF, taking over the role from his predecessor Italian Primo Nebiolo in December 1999, under whom he had been a senior vice-president since 1995.

He held the presidency for 16 years until this year when former British Olympic gold medalist Sebastian Coe beat Ukrainian Sergey Bubka in August elections in order to succeed Diack.
