Paddy McCourt's magic will always bring out the kid from within

"He's goes past one player, and another, he takes it around a third, can he finish this off..magnificent! The Derry Pele does it again"

There are few players that can make you laugh they were that good - one of those players takes to the field for the last time tonight.

Immeasurable by stats, what Paddy McCourt brought to the table is something that needs to be seen to be believed.

If you haven't seem him in the flesh, you'll have seen him on your twitter feed after he scored a goal as described above.

Moments like that will define the career of McCourt - who will almost certainly go down as another player who we feel never really reached the heights he should have.

Then again, his ability was so unique that had he regimented himself to play a style of football to suit teams of a higher standard, he may not be remembered in such a good light.

Had he just adjusted his attitude and concentrated on improving his fitness and tactical nuance he could go on to bigger and better things is an easy thing to point out when you look at his career.

This is something that Stephen Kenny did during his time as Derry City manager.

He did move on from Derry and across the water to Scotland where once again received the fans seal of approval but not the manager's.

Celtic would be the highest level the Derryman played at and it too would prove to be a series of cameo appearances from the bench and the odd moment of magic like his goal against St Johnston.

"Don't sell McCourt, Paddy McCourt, I just don't think you understand" would ring out at Celtic Park as his career at the Hoops came to an end and it proved to be true - nobody in the boardroom could understand.

They didn't understand the beauty behind McCourt's play, the sheer brilliance of his off-the-cuff style of play.

One drop of the shoulder and he would burst away from a midfielder - at a speed nobody thought he had - as though they weren't there.

At the highest level though, this was destined to fail. The modern game has no place for players like McCourt.

Nowadays you need some sort of structure to your game, to be able to follow tactics, stay in your own grid - it's all a bit, predictable.

McCourt is the opposite. There's no structure, no pre-planned movements and absolutely unpredictable.

When you watch him play football it feels like that's how it should be played. He is the type of player we all wanted to be when we were on the schoolyard.

As he plays his last game for Finn Harps tonight, one more player that can bring a smile to your face on a whim hangs up his boots.
