Padraig Harrington hopes for a vice-captaincy role at September's Ryder Cup

Padraig Harrington returns to the scene of his last PGA Tour win with his eyes already set on a backroom role at September's Ryder Cup.

The three time-major winner ended a six-year drought in America when he won the Honda Classic last March. Harrington defeated Daniel Berger in a play-off as the tournament ran into a fifth day.

Speaking as the reigning tournament champion, Harrington revealed that he is prepared to work in the background at the Ryder Cup as a vice-captain under Darren Clarke. Harrington has played in the event six times and worked with Paul McGinley in 2014 as vice-captain.

According to the Irish Examiner, Harrington says he has spoken to Clarke about working behind the scenes at Hazeltine. "Yes, I have spoken to him and yes, we have discussed it."

Harrington was part of the team that helped bring golf back to the Olympic Games and he stated he needs to win at least twice this year to have any chance of playing in Brazil and Minnesota. "As much I would like to play in both, they’re long shots, real long shots. So I wouldn’t be putting any money on making the team. And if I’m not in the team then I would love to be there as part of Darren’s backroom team."
