Paralympics Day 1: How the Irish have fared

The first day of action at the 2016 Paralympic Games is over and it was a busy few hours for the Irish.

Ailbhe Kelly was in action in the pool at the start of the day, finishing 7th in the Swimming S8 400m FS Heats, although as she told Newstalk Sports' Oisin Langan her strongest event will be next week.

James Scully later qualified for the final of the Swimming S5 200m FS by finishing third in his heat, with a season's best time.

He followed that up with 6th place in the final of the S5 200 metres FS with a personal best time.

In cycling, Damien Vereker and Sean Hahessy were eighth in the Individual B Pursuit Qualifying Heats, while the Irish 7-a-side football team lost 6-0 to Ukraine.

In the Shooting R1 10m Rifle Standing Qualifiers, Sean Baldwin finished 19th.

Two-time T-13 100 metres gold medalist Jason Smyth eased into the final by winning his heat and finishing fastest in today's action.
