Pat Nevin on drug testing: 'I was tested once in 800 games'

Pat Nevin has revealed that he only had to undergo a drug test once in 800 games during his professional career.

Speaking on Off The Ball as always on a  Monday, in a week that has seen a couple of players test positive for recreational drugs - most notably Hull's Jake Livermore who tested positive for cocaine - the former Chelsea, Everton and Scotland midfielder described the testing regime in his time as a "joke".

"I think it became a more common thing over the last 10 or 15 years because certain drugs became much more easily available and certain ones became much more stylish. There's a part of you also that thinks that maybe it shouldn't at all be in any way a regular recreational drug for any of them because if you get caught, they're stuffed for their entire career and everybody knows that there definitely has been an increase in the amount of testing that goes on," said Pat.

"There was not enough testing before. In fact it was bordering on a joke. In fact, forget that! It was a joke! Players were not tested enough and there was an understanding between the clubs and everybody that you better not test them in case they find something. That's almost down the route of cycling. I played 800 games and I played a whole bunch of internationals. I was tested once and I could have been on anything."

Pat added that drink was the drug of choice for players in his era and that he never got the feeling that he played with or against players who might have been using recreational drugs.

But he suggested that he had suspicions about facing players from some foreign clubs who may have been on performance enhancing drugs.

"I remember playing against some players but I thought they were performance enhancing drugs they might be on and that was usually playing against certain foreign sides. You couldn't prove it, so you couldn't say anything," he said.

Meanwhile, discussing the weekend action, Pat gave his take on the huge Anfield send off for Steven Gerrard.
