Pat Nevin: Man United basically finished the game with nine defenders

Pat Nevin joined Off the Ball for The Football Show on Monday to review the weekend's Premier League action

Despite Manchester United picking up another three points after a 1-0 over Southampton at St. Mary's - their negative tactics have come in for some criticism.

Speaking to Joe Molloy, Nevin said: "I was really looking forward to it because they've obviously been playing really well so far.

"And, for the first half, I was getting kind of excited particularly by Rashford - the way he was playing. He looks lightning when he gets forward and Mkhytaryan was looking lively and then, just as the game went on, particularly the last half hour, this is awful.

"Ok, you need to sometimes do this and sometimes defend and sometimes just throw every player behind the ball. Do you know how they finished the game? I don't know if you noticed it. Man United finished the game with three full-backs, three centre-backs, three sitting midfielders - that's basically nine defenders! And, Lukaku up the pitch.

"A bit of me was thinking 'that's so disappointing' and there was a wee rumble from the Man United fans around me when I was walking back afterwards to the train station - they weren't absolutely delighted, the vast majority of them, but in the end - that's how you win.

"And, that's why I've been backing Man United - they know how to win or Jose Mourinho knows how to win," he added.

Asked about the reason for United's change in approach, Nevin praised Southampton for forcing their visitors onto the back foot.

"Right from the start of the second-half, they had a go and instead of Man United trading punches with them - they just sat further and further and further back.

"I'm not going to moan about Man United, I watched Chelsea do exactly the same thing at  Southampton last season."
