Paul Dunne earns spot at US Amateur Championship after St Andrews heroics

It's been all go in world of golf this morning.

First to the news that Irish golfer Paul Dunne has been chosen to play in the US Amateur Championship this month after receiving an special exemption from the USGA for his heroics in this year's Open Championship.

The 22-year-old lit up St Andrews and became the first amateur to hold a 54-hole lead since Bobby Jones in 1927.

The championship will take place in Olympia Fields County Club, Illinois between 17-23 August.

An exceptional achievement for the young amateur, who intends to turn professional in September. Dunne is currently 38th in the World Amateur Golf rankings.

Diana Murphy, chairman of the USGA’s Championship Committee, said:“Paul Dunne demonstrated his ability to compete with anyone by his outstanding play in the recent British Open at St. Andrews,”

“The USGA is pleased that he will be joining the strong international field of 312 players in the U.S. Amateur, our oldest national championship, at Olympia Fields.”

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy has booked a practice round at Whistling Straits this weekend ahead of the the US PGA, according to reports.

The world number one missed the third major of the year,The Open championship, after he suffered ligament damage during a kick about with friends.

McIlroy will be hoping to return in time to defend his title and will test out his fitness over the coming days.

Another former world number one has revealed that he is finally beginning to find his form once again.

Tiger Woods finished the Quicken Loans championship this weekend on eight under par, one of the better performance of an otherwise dismal season.

"I’m getting some speed back, which is nice. I’m starting to pump the ball out there again and I know my loft of my irons are very weak compared to today’s standards" he told reporters after the tournament.

"I’m hitting the ball up there with some of the bigger guys again. I got my speed nice on top of that and the fact I was able to make some putts and the short game becoming good again like it used to be.”

Woods shot a 68 and a 66 before a third round 74 put him adrift of the leaders, but a final round 68 saw him enjoy one of his best finishes of 2015.
