Paul McGinley: Ireland is very much at the forefront of producing high quality players

The Paul McGinley Golf Academy at Mount Juliet Estate is now open to the public and the facility has a brand new 15-acre driving range, two putting greens, a short game area, and the most advanced teaching software.

The former Ryder Cup captain joined Saturday's Off the Ball to discuss the current state of Irish golf and the lack of winners we have produced in either the Euopean or PGA Tours recently.

"It comes in waves those kind of things," McGinley told Dave McIntyre, adding: "You're seeing it at the top of professional golf over in america at the moment and they've obviously got a strong wave going on at the moment.

"We've had it in the past in Europe - it kind of ebbs and flows that way. I think the structures at amateur level in Ireland are incredibly strong from my experience in dealing with other countries.

"Ireland is very much at the forefront of producing and having structures in place to produce high quality players but talent comes along in spurts for some reason. It ebbs and flows and there's certainly nothing terminal that we have to worry about.

"It's just a matter of keep doing the structures, keep attending to what we're doing and keeping the players motivated more than anything else and concentrated on what they're doing and kind of let the natural instinctiveness come through.

"The more motivated, the more into what you're doing, the more ambitious you are - the more chance of success you're going to have.

"What we're seeing now is a huge range of players and number of players who can hit the ball 300 yards, who are technically in an incredibly strong place and very well equipped to go as far as they want in the game and it's that mental ability is what separates the ones who eventually rise to the top," he added.
