Police make an arrest in connection with coin throwing incident at West Brom player

Police have made an arrest as part of the investigation into an incident during a recent FA Cup tie in which West Bromwich Albion player Chris Brunt was hit by a coin.

Brunt approached the Reading fans to applaud their 3-1 win when he suffered a facial cut as a result of the attack which was believed to have come from the direction of the West Brom fans.

The police confirmed on Saturday that they considered the incident to be an assault while the Football Association also indicated that they would investigate the matter.

Thames Valley Police posted an update on their Twitter account today, revealing that they had apprehended someone in relation to the event.

The Northern Ireland international was walking towards a Reading fan to give them his shirt when Brunt was seen to be hunched over an clutching his face.

He then shouted his disgust at the spectators he suspected to have thrown the coin before being escorted off the pitch by police.

After the game, Brunt said:

''I’ve been here a long time and I’ve loved my time here and that’s the first time I’ve been ashamed of our supporters.''

The club have declined to speak to the media throughout the duration of the investigation but it is believed that they are willing to hand down a lifetime ban to the guilty party.
