Premier League Roundup: Roooney ends his drought in a high scoring round of games

It was a particularly high scoring afternoon around the Premier League as the goals just kept coming in every game.

Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 Manchester City (12.45pm)

Spurs produced a fantastic second half display in the early kick off to sink Manchester City with relative ease, despite an opening period where they looked as though they would be outmuscled by Pellegrini's side.

Goals from Dier, Alderweireld, Kane and Lamela were the undoing of City, who took the lead through new signing Kevin De Bruyne. After a flawless start to the season, they have now conceded seven goals in two games, which could renew the pressure on Manuel Pellegrini, who came into this season with question marks over his job.

Leicester City 2-5 Arsenal

Leicester were unable to keep up their run of coming back from the dead in today's game against Arsenal, as Alexis Sanchez finally hit the type of form that we had come to expect from the Chilean after a number of impressive performances last season.

He scored a hat-trick as the Gunners showed their teeth, having had a disastrous game against Chelsea the previous week. Jamie Vardy was once again on target, opening the scoring after 13 minutes, but Theo Walcott responded just five minutes later, pulling Arsenal level, but not before they had a few scares with Petr Cech called into action to make a vital save and Vardy hitting the woodwork.

That was when Sanchez imposed his will on the game, scoring just after the half hour, and from there he was unstoppable. He doubled his tally jsust before the hour and then rounded off the hat trick in the 81st minute. Having exerted himself over the last two summers with the national side, it should be no surprise that Sanchez would show some signs of tiredness at the start of the season, and Arsenal fans will hope that this is where he truly begins his campaign.

Jamie Vardy pulled another goal back for Leicester in the 89th minute, but Olivier Giroud made sure that any thoughts of a late miracle comeback were crushed as he slotted home Arsenal's fifth in stoppage time.

Liverpool 3-2 Aston Villa

Brendan Rodgers would have been glad to see Daniel Sturridge back in the starting lineup last weekend, but he will be even happier to see him back among the goals this afternoon after the injury-stricken striker slotted home two tidy finishes that were vital in securing the three points.

James Milner, who has also been out of form recently, scored the fastest goal of the season to date after just 66 seconds, and was also involved in the build up to Sturridge's first goal, which was hit home with a lovely outside of the boot finish.

Rudy Gestede pulled one back in the 66th minute, but Sturridge struck once again within a minute to extend Liverpool's lead. It turned out that they would need it as Gestede was on target again shortly afterwards, this time with his head, to ensure there was a nervy finish to the game for Rodgers and the fans at Anfield.

That result may well serve to relieve a little bit of pressure on the Liverpool boss, but the style in which they are conceding goals is still a worry for fans, one of which was a very basic low cross into the box slotted home by Gestede who easily lost his marker.

However, with Benteke in decent form before he was injured, along with Danny Ings and Sturridge now among the goals, Rodgers may have to tinker with a system that allows him to get as many of his strikers as possible on the pitch.

Manchester United 3-0 Sunderland

Wunderkind Anthony Martial was not on target for Louis van Gaal's side this afternoon, but one of their other big summer signings was in the form of Memphis Depay.

He opened the scoring on the stroke of half time, but the headlines will all belong to Wayne Rooney, who finally broke his scoring drought, which stretched to nearly 999 minutes as he bundled home the ball with his knee from Martial's cross. He won't care too much about how it went in however, so long as he got the goal he was looking for.

Juan Mata also continued his fantastic form as he added another in the 90th minute to put further gloss on the scoreline, leaving Manchester United on top of the table this weekend for the first time since Fergie's reign ended. Sunderland, on the other hand, are still without a win and looking in very deep trouble indeed.

Southampton 3-1 Swansea City

Swansea's strong start to the season looks to be fading slightly after a few games where they have failed to really hit the heights of the type of performance that saw them win out over Manchester United just a few short weeks ago.

The Saints, on the other hand, have seemingly rediscovered their form and were once again dominant here as they put three past their opposition. Virgil Van Dijk wasted little time in getting Southampton off the mark scoring after just 11 minutes, but despite plenty of chances they were unable to add to their lead until the second half.

Dusan Tadic grabbed the second after the break, with Saido Mane making sure of the result just after the hour mark and wrapping up the three points for Ronald Koeman's side.

A sluggish Swansea didn't seem to have a response, and a late penalty from Gylfi Sigurdsson was only a consolation for Garry Monk and his team, who will hope that they can once again click up front in their next game.

Stoke City 2-1 AFC Bournemouth

Jonathan Walters got Stoke off the mark and helped his side to their first win of the season over Bournemouth, but it could have been a different story if it were not for the injury to in form striker Callum Wilson early on. Walters scored shortly after the half hour mark to give his side the lead at the half.

Dan Gosling grabbed an equaliser with 15 minutes left to give Stoke something to worry about, and once again showing that despite the inexperience and small budget of Eddie Howe's side, they won't be overawed by difficult games in the Premier League. With less than 10 minutes left to go, Mame Diouf rescued the points for Stoke.

Despite all the impressive signings Hughes' side have made, they still haven't quite gelled in a way that gets the best out of all the talent they have at their disposal.

West Ham United 2-2 Norwich City

Irishman Robbie Brady got his first goal in the Premier League for two years in today's draw at West Ham, who really are proving to be a completely different team at home than they are away.

Brady struck after just nine minutes, but Diafra Sakho leveled after the half hour mark to give the Hammers fans something to cheer about.

Both sides had plenty of chances, but it was substitute Nathan Redmond who grabbed the goal off a Wes Hoolahan assist, at which point it looked as though they might get all three points. However, Cheikhou Kouyate popped up with nearly 93 minutes on the clock to break Norwich hearts and grab a dramatic equaliser.

Slaven Bilic has masterminded wins against Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal away already this season, meaning that they have a 100% record outside of Upton Park, but they've only won one of their games in front of their home crowd.

Newcastle 2-2 Chelsea

A low quality affair, aside from the goals, saw Chelsea forced to make somewhat of a remarkable comeback to rescue a draw from the jaws of defeat

A bad start to the season continues for Mourinho, but he will more than likely be relieved that his side got anything out of the game at all, given the fact they were 2-0 down at one stage. Steve McClaren on the other hand, will be disappointed that they trhew away the lead.
