Racecourses urged to increase security after Irish jockey is allegedly assaulted at Southwell

Four individuals have been arrested in connection with an alleged assault on Irish jockey, Aidan Coleman, which left him requiring dental treatment for two chipped teeth.

Police are investigating the incident which took place after the days final race, the Book Christmas At Southwell Racecourse Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, at 5.10pm on Tuesday.

A statement issued by Nottinghamshire Police read: “Four people have been arrested following an assault at Southwell Racecourse yesterday afternoon (29 September 2015).

“Officers were called at 5.23pm to reports of a man being assaulted in the weighing room.

“They attended and arrested two men and one woman on suspicion of assault and criminal damage, and another woman for obstructing police.

“The victim sustained minor injuries.”

David Roberts, MD of Southwell, described the course as a "friendly, local track” and insisted they would be following all the appropriate procedures to deal with such an incident.

“We will be reviewing procedures and increasing the security presence around the changing rooms and across the racecourse,” said Roberts.

The quartet spent much of Wednesday in custody before being released on police bail, according to Nottinghamshire police.
