Racing charity builds exoskeleton for paralysed teen jockey

A horse racing charity has unveiled the space-age exoskeleton it built for a 21-year-old jockey paralysed during a race.

Jonjo Bright, who suffered severe injuries from a fall in March 2013 aged 19, is benefiting from the machine which was specially commissioned by the Irish Injured Jockeys group.

The suit enables Jonjo to stand and walk, with the guidance of a physio trained in Ekso Bionics.

Ekso Bionics helps survivors of stroke, spinal cord injury and other forms of lower extremity weakness to walk again.

The suit helps with breathing and blood pressure while reducing muscle wastage and increasing bone density.

Jonjo Bright gave a demonstration of the suit recently, saying “In a way we are exploring the unknown.... this is what I was dreaming of”.

The exoskeleton is housed at a facility in Neurokinex in Co. Antrim.

Irish Injured Jockeys is funded by public donations. Ivan and Chris from Breakfast have been doing their part for Newstalk.com:
