Redknapp brings curtain down on QPR stay

Harry Redknapp has resigned as manager of Queens Park Rangers.

The former West Ham and Tottenham boss leaves with the London club second bottom of the Premier League.

QPR lost 3-1 at Stoke on Saturday to make it 11 defeats from 11 away from home.

Redknapp took over at Loftus Road in 2012, but could not prevent the club from being relegated in his first season.

But he did guide QPR to promotion via last season's Championship playoffs.

Explaining his decision, the managerial veteran said: "Sadly I need immediate surgery on my knee which is going to stop me from doing my job in the coming weeks. It means I won’t be able to be out on the training pitch every day, and if I can’t give 100 per cent I feel it’s better for someone else to take over the reins.

"My relationship with [owner] Tony Fernandes has been one of the highlights of my footballing career and I wish the club every success. I am confident they will survive in the Premier League this year."

According to reports, Redknapp is believed to have been furious with the club's failure to bolster his struggling squad before the close of the transfer window last night after bids for the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor and Matt Jarvis failed to materialise.

Former QPR striker Les Ferdinand and Chris Ramsey have been placed in temporary charge of the team until further notice.
