Roscommon boss leaves job with an upbeat message

John Evans has stepped down as manager of the Roscommon senior footballers.

The Kerry native was expected to be put forward for re-election at tonight's county board meeting. But he has now withdrawn his name from consideration.

During his three years in the charge, Evans led Roscommon from Division Three to Division One of the National League. However, this season's Championship campaign ended in a disappointing qualifier loss to Fermanagh.

In a statement circulated by Roscommon county board, Evans said: "It is with regret that I wish to withdraw my name from the nomination of upcoming position of Roscommon Senior Football Manager for 2016. I agreed to a two-year term initially, followed by a 1 year continuation. However, I do not wish to have my name put forward for a further year and I want to thank the executive committee for their vote of confidence in me."

He also concluded with a message of hope for the players, saying: "Three trophies in three years, not bad for a start! I look forward to seeing you mix it with the best as 'eventually' Roscommon will be the best."
