Saturday Night Takeaways: Watford need to protect Ighalo

Arsenal have kept the pressure on Manchester City at the top of the table and with only four goals separating the sides after 11 games, this is set to be a seriously competitive campaign.

It seems the less traditional powerhouses of English football are preparing to take on the the Premier League big boys, but can they maintain their fast starts?

1) Surely a case of 'when' rather than 'if' for Jose Mourinho

Another loss, another home loss and another controversial post match interview; Jose Mourinho's time in charge of Chelsea surely must be coming to an end.

Today accounted for loss number six of the season and with no end in sight, the Chelsea board of directors would be foolish not to begin the search for his replacement.

Mourinho needed a big performance today from his players and for 44 minutes he got it. Defending wasn't resolute, but it was enough. As soon as Liverpool's first goal went in, however, it was hard to see how they could muster up the creativity for anything else.

Liverpool slowly took control of possession and once they neutralised the threat of Diego Costa, there was very little else to damage them. Hazard's substitution was a telling sign.

It'll be interesting to see how this situation plays out over the coming weeks and Mourinho will need something of a Christmas miracle if he is to make it to the New Year with results like that.

2) Someone needs to wrap Odion Ighalo in bubble wrap

The Nigerian has been the second most prolific striker int the league thus far, with seven goals to his name. His brace today proved exactly why he is so important to Watford.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe lamented at the start of the season that his side had played well after numerous games, but that the important thing was that they win games and score goals.

Ighalo and Troy Deeney have worked tirelessly to ensure Watford have a good chance of staying in the Premier League and have hit form despite a slow start.

The Nigerian has had a hand in nine of Watford's 10 goals this season, an injury to him would be detrimental to their season.

It might be the right time to start rotating and making sure he doesn't pick up knocks and strains. Heading toward the busy Christmas period, they'll need all the points they can get and Ighalo might be the man to deliver them.

3) Arsenal continue to show title winning credentials

Its been said time and again: this season is perhaps their best chance to win a Premier Legaue title for the first time in over a decade.

On paper, fixtures against Watford (A), Everton (H) and Swansea (A) are daunting enough. But the ease with which Arsenal have dispatched these teams shows just how far they've come in recent weeks.

Their league cup exit against Sheffield Wednesday aside, Arsenal's form has been nothing short of excellent and with players hitting form, it is easy to see how they can go on to mount and more importantly maintain a title challenge.

Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott need to stay fit, as does the mercurial Mesut Ozil. Petr Cech has chipped in with his second clean sheet in three league games.

Should this form continue, they will certainly be one of the front runners for the Premier League title.

4) Manchester United continue to fire blanks

Louis van Gaal's men have scored just one goal in their last four games. They haven't scored at all in their last three.

It looked for a time at the start of the season that the philosophy was beginning to work. United were dominating games and further to that, they were winning football matches.

But their failure to land a world class striker in the summer is finally showing as their hectic schedule is taking it's toll on the players.

Wayne Rooney hasn't looked on it for some time and this isn't to take away from the achievements of the player. He is one of the greatest players, let alone strikers, that the league has ever seen. But a 30-year-old striker needs more than just help from two teenagers (Martial and Wilson).

Fellaini is not a striker and no matter how much ball you lump up to him, he never will be. United need to shop smart in January if they are to be in the mix come season's end.

5) Willian the only bright spark in a squad full of falling stars

Watching Chelsea earlier today, it is hard to pick out many positives in an otherwise poor performance. This has been a staple all season.

One positive today and has been in the last few weeks has been the performances of Brazilian midfielder, Willian.

His tireless effort this afternoon oozed of class, precision and above all else, experience. When Liverpool began to grow into the game, the pace of the game increased.

Time and again, Willian showed his intelligence by drawing a foul and slowing the game down. This gave his midfielders a chance to get into position and his defenders a chance to push up the pitch, having played deep for large swathes of the first half.

He constantly threatened on the wing and played dangerous ball into the box. With Hazard being taken off, he and Oscar turned into the creative players on the team, which may have been too great an ask for a player who had exerted himself in the opening 60 minutes.

Should Chelsea fail to make top four or quite possibly top six, they could face losing one of their best players next summer.
