Shane Duffy on Brighton: "It was a difficult start for us"

Republic of Ireland defender Shane Duffy joined Saturday's Off the Ball to discuss Brighton's start to the new Premier League season.

The Seagull's endured a difficult start to the season, losing their first two matches but they're gradually found their feet in England's top flight.

Speaking to Off the Ball's Eoin Sheahan, Duffy said: "Inside the squad, we're always confident. It was a difficult start for us with everyone wanting a striker to come in and everyone was a bit panicky. We've got goals in the team from everywhere and obviously we scored in the last game so it was a good point - just try and keep it closed at the back.

"We still brought in a few players - they've taken a little bit of time to settle and they're settling in now and the manager trusts the players that got us here. He's played the majority of us so far and we've done alright.

"Obviously he would have liked to have strenghtened and he has done done that - not to standards of some clubs in the Premier League. But, a club like us, you've got to bring the right ones in and if they're not the right ones - there's no point just bringing numbers in," he added.

Asked whether the seaside town had embraced life in the big time, the defender said: "Yeah, it's been brilliant. The fans have taken it all in. They've been delighted with being in the Premier League and Brighton is a lovely place to live. Every game is a sell-out and the fans are enjoying the big games so hopefully that continues.

Chris Hughton's reign as manager at the south coast club saw them narrowly miss out on promotion two years ago before he guided them to the promised land last season. Speaking about the former Republic of Ireland's influence from the dug-out, Duffy said: "He's been brilliant. I think everyone knows at Brighton how much success he has brought to the club. He's been great - he treats everyone the same."
