Skrtel slams contract offer as "unacceptable"

Martin Skrtel has cast doubt over his future at Liverpool after refusing to sign a contract extension, a deal he deems “unacceptable”.

The 30-year-old will be out of contract next summer and Liverpool have moved to sure up his contract for another year.

However, the offer tabled has not been satisfactory in the eyes of the Slovakian international.

"It's unacceptable for me. I think that contracts like this offered to players who are much older than me or the player who had some health problems” Skrtel told Slovak media outlet Aktualne.

"The contract which has been offered to me is unacceptable, so I did not sign it. I have one year left and there has been some speculation about the interest from other clubs. We will see what happens."

Skrtel started 48 of Liverpool’s 58 matches last season having established himself as the first-choice central defender but insists the terms on offer do not reflect his contribution to the team.

Regarding the performance as a whole this season, the former Zenit St Petersburg player feels that the team were not up to standards this season.

“It was unsuccessful. We had other targets. It is not the point whether we finished fifth or sixth because we will not play in the Champions League next season. Suárez leaving was the main reason. We missed him a lot.

“We had many changes in the team and new players had a tough situation with acclimatising. That was the reason for the bad first half of the season. The second part was better, but we finished bad.”

There has not yet been any indication whether or not Liverpool will table a revised offer.
