"Spectating last year, playing this year!"

It has been a life changing 12 months for golfer Gary Hurley.

The Waterford golfer makes his debut in the professional ranks this week at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland and will play on The Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns. This time last year Hurley was also at the event, but as a spectator.

Hurley was one of the stars of the Great Britain and Ireland team in their recent Walker Cup triumph. He scored two and a half points from his four games and was unbeaten in his two singles matches. Earlier this summer, Hurley finished second at the European Amateur Chmapionships in Slovakia finishing one shot behind the winner, Stefano Mazzoli/

The Links Chmapionship is one of the more popular tournaments on the European Tour as it partners professionals and amateurs together in a team competition. Hurley is to partner former Irish captain and Off the Ball's guest presenter Brian O'Driscoll.

O'Driscoll is hoping Hurley wont have to carry him throughout the week in Scotland.
