Sportsperson of the Week: Paul Dunne

If you have been following the British Open at all this weekend I'm sure you will have heard Paul Dunne's name been thrown about. Well with Round 3 complete the Irish amateur golfer is joint leader at St Andrews on -12.

Not many outside of Irish golf aficionados may have heard of Paul Dunne before Thursday but the Greystones amateur is certainly making a name for himself.

Dunne hit an opening round of 69 on Thursday, keeping him in touching distance of the leaders at St Andrews.

Most probably expected the 22-year-old to fall away as the weekend progressed but he was at it again on Friday with another brilliant 69 to move to -6 overall.

Today he produced another stellar round, a round of 66, to move himself joint top with Jason Day and Louis Oosthuizen.

He has also the tied-lowest score by an amateur after 36 holes in Open history and could become the first Irish player to win The Silver Medal (best score by an amateur) since a certain Rory McIlroy in 2007.

Coming from nowhere Dunne has catapulted himself into the limelight similar to that of Shane Lowry when he won the Irish Open in 2009.

On Monday Paul Dunne can't inscribe his name into the annals of golfing history and become the first amateur since Bobby Jones in 1930 to win The British Open.
