St. Patrick's Athletic defeat Galway on penalties to claim EA Sports Cup

Galway United and St. Patrick's Athletic played out an exciting game that, despite a large number of chances at either end, somehow failed to produce any goals.

Although there were chances at both ends during the 90 minutes and into extra time, the destination of the EA Sports Cup had to be decided on penalties in front of over 3,500 fans at Eamonn Deacy Park this weekend.

In the first half, Galway were forced to spend long periods defending, not without a few shaky nerves at times, but saw the game through to the half with things still level.

Galway keeper Conor Winn was a central figure in that period, denying Greg Bolger after 20 minutes, and later in the game also pulled off a stunning save when it looked that James Chambers had broken the deadlock.

At the other end, young goalkeeper Conor O'Malley made himself a hero with a fine display in the penalty shootout, saving a penalty from Jake Keegan and from Andy O'Connell to seal the victory for his side.

Ian Morris slotted home the winner for the side from Inchicore, with a 4-3 win to bring the trophy back to Dublin.
