What is the situation like for female jockeys in Irish horse racing?

Last night, Michelle Payne became the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup after partnering 66/1 shot Prince of Penzance.

After her victory, she had some words for doubters, telling Channel Seven: "I want to say to everyone else, 'get stuffed', because women can do anything and we can beat the world".

This year's Irish Grand National Champion Katie Walsh and five-time Cheltenham race-winning jockey Nina Carberry joined us on Off The Ball to discuss what the situation for female jockeys is like in Ireland.

"I must say I think it's very fair here. It's extremely level. If you're good enough and you get the opportunities and work hard enough, then anything can happen," said Walsh of the situation in this country, with Carberry concurring with that point.

But she also added another point about the importance of ladies' races.

"I do say that the lady races are very important for girls that don't have Katie and my background. It gives them a chance to show what they can give and it's a big help to have sponsors to sponsor those ladies' races," Carberry said.
