Steven Reid on Ireland: "It might be time for one or two fresh faces"

Former Ireland international Steven Reid cast his eye over Ireland's World Cup qualifying chances on Off the Ball on Sunday.

Speaking to Richie McCormack and asked if Martin O'Neill's men will qualify for next year's global showpiece, the former Irish international said: "I think it's going to be difficult. I think I've always been optimistic about our chances of qualifying and getting results, especially in the big games against the big nations.

"I've always had that belief that they'll dig out those results. I think three points against Moldova will be a given almost but I think that game away in Wales is going to be a really tough game.

"I think with the threat going forward of Bale, I've seen Vokes today who has been a powerhouse for Burnley as well but in an attacking sense, I do fear us going to Wales a little bit and getting a result.

Asked if bringing in Scott Hogan or Sean Maguire to freshen up the squad is a good idea, he said: "We need a creativity - it's plain for everyone to see it's missing. I think there's been an over reliance to get Wes in and when he has got in, not done as well as maybe he could have, maybe he's not been given the opportunity enough but at the moment we are just severely lacking in that creativity so it might be time for one or two fresh faces.

"There's almost nothing to lose now so if a couple of those names that you've just mentioned do impress over the next few weeks - then there's every chance that they might be thrown in in those two games," he added.
