Sunday night takeaways: Spurs surge towards Europe, Mourinho finally gets a win and Klopp embarrasses Pellegrini

There tends to be a heightened level of scrutiny on everything that happens on a weekend following the international break. It is understandable when you consider some of the news stories emerging from this weekend's slew of games.

For those of you who might have missed any of the news, here are all of the main talking points from this weekend's Premier League action.

Leicester sitting pretty

Jamie Vardy has now scored in 10 consecutive games, equaling Ruud van Nistlerooy's run of scoring. The 28-year old said he has to "pinch" himself following his red-hot start to the season.

More importantly, perhaps, is that Leicester now sit atop the Premier League table after 13 games. They play Manchester United next in a game that could make or break Claudio Ranieri's men.

Chelsea get a win

Jose Mourinho's men made hard work of a home game against lowly Norwich but they eventually broke their resistance and won the game 1-0 thanks to a Diego Costa goal.

Chelsea now sit 15th and just five points from safety. They will need to put a string of results together in order to convince anyone that they are back to themselves but a win against Norwich was a good start. They face Maccabi Tel-Aviv this Tuesday and will look to continue on from their win this weekend.

Klopp and Liverpool stun City

James Milner returned to the Etihad for the first time since his summer move to Anfield. It was also Raheem Sterling's first time playing his former club since he forced his way out of Liverpool in the summer.

It would be Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Jurgen Klopp's tactics that would steal the headlines, however. Liverpool dominated the game from start to finish as they pressed high, hassled Man City defenders into mistakes and ultimately won 4-1 in a game that could be the start of a surge by Liverpool.

United win it at the death

Manchester United have not been playing particularly well. They have been winning, though, and that will be the most important thing come the end of the season.

They put themselves in a good position to beat Watford with an early Memphis Depay goal but Troy Deeney equalized from the penalty spot late on. Bastian Schweinsteiger saved United's blushes with a scrappy goal in injury time to steal all three points for United on a weekend when most of their rivals lost.

Arsenal slip up

Arsenal travelled to the Hawthornes and suffered through a performance that assured us that Murphy's Law is alive and well. Nothing went right for them on the day and when Santi Cazorla slipped when taking a penalty that could have made it 2-2, it was time to start looking to next week.

They currently sit fourth and Spurs sit just two points behind them.

Spurs hammer West Ham

West Ham played in their first game without star attacker Dmitri Payet and it did not end well. They ended up losing 4-1 and could have lost by more.

Spurs on the other hand attacked well, remained compact in defense and have continued their excellent form following the international break. Not one team in the Premier League will want to play Pochettino's side following some savvy attacking displays of late.
