Team Ireland win their first gold at Special Olympics

Team Ireland were among the big winners on day three of the Special Olympics in Los Angeles, with the gymnasts the stars of the show.

The team brought their medals tally up to an impressive 15, featuring four gold, three silver and eight bronze.

Belfast's Kirsty Devlin came out on top in her Rope competition in Gymnastics Rhythmic Level 1 to claim gold and took her personal tally to four; two gold and two silver medals.

The 21-year-old who trains in SALTO Gymnastics Club went on to claim fourth place ribbons and her mother Elizabeth was jubilant as she watched Kirtsty collect her medals.

"I’m absolutely so proud – the tears were in my eyes, watching Kirsty. She’s just amazing. The whole family is so proud of her,” she said.

“There are four of us out here in LA supporting Kirsty – myself, my brother and his wife and my son. She’ll be a celebrity when she gets home – everyone will shake her hand and congratulate her. They all love her back in Belfast. Everyone loves her.”

But the medal haul didn't stop there.

Limerick's Ashleigh O’Hagan (21) then claimed two bronze medals and three place ribbons before saying:“It’s absolutely fantastic and a great achievement. I’m proud as punch."

Cork's Aoife O'Sullivan rounded off a great day in the gym collecting one gold and two bronze medals, as well as two place ribbons.

Peter Malynn then claimed gold in the final of the singles bocce competition, a sport resembling that of bowls.

The Mullingar man ran out 9-7 winner in his decider and the rest of Team Ireland bowling squad enjoyed some success in the Doubles event when Mayo's Martina Walsh  and Ruth Geerah from Westmeath claimed bronze.

Ireland's record goalscorer Robbie Keane was in attendance for the men's 11-a-side footballers first group game against Bangladesh.

Keane delivered the pre-match speech, but it wasn't enough to stop the Irish side being on the wrong end of a 4-1 defeat.

"The scoreline didn’t do the lads justice. They are obviously disappointed but it’s important they pick themselves back up now,” he said after the game.

A lot of positives to take from the day and Team Ireland are proving themselves a real force in the summer games.
