Tears on the green over "gimme" at the Solheim Cup

The Solheim Cup courted controversy yesterday and a 15-inch putt on the 17th green was at the centre of it.

United States' Alison Lee thought she had been given a gimme on the 17th green by European Suzann Petterson and Charley Hull. She picked her ball up and was ready to carry on her round.

Petterson rejected the claim that she had given Lee a concession and was not giving in as she and Hull went on to win the match 2&1. Both Hull and Lee were crying in the midst of all the hoopla.

Juli Inkster, the American captain, was initially very annoyed but then stated she and her team no longer wanted the point due to the way the Europeans had acted. She said,

“It’s a done deal and you know what, we don’t want it [the point] now,” she said. “It is just BS as far as I’m concerned."

She continued, “I have never seen anything like it in my career. It’s just not right. You just don’t do that to your peers. It’s disrespectful.

“I saw Charley walking off and Suzann kind of turned her back and then Suzann said she did not give it to her. If that’s the way they need to play to win, then we will just try to do our best out there today. There’s no way they could ever justify that. I don’t care what they say. You just don’t do that to your peers.”

Euroe's Captain, Carin Koch, said that there was a rules meeting before the tournament and conceding shots had a specific protocal, "We had a rules meeting where it was stated you have to concede a putt very clearly.”
