The Premier League Weekend in Numbers: A high scoring derby and the new manager bounce

Ahead of this weekend's matches, here are a few interesting stats that you can trot out to sound like you've been studying the game deeply.

Manchester United v Manchester City

Wayne Rooney will be celebrating his 30th birthday ton Saturday, just one day before the big Manchester derby, and will be hoping that he gets gifted a goal at some stage in the proceedings.

The odds are on his side too, given that over the last few seasons this fixture has produced plenty of goals. Dating back to the 2011/12 season, there have only been two occasions where this match failed to produce three or more goals, both of which were 1-0 wins for Manchester City.

The standout results were City's 6-1 (October 2011) and 4-1 (September 2013) wins, while United also racked up plenty of goals in their 4-2 victory at Old Trafford in April of this year. And then, of course, there was this...

Sunderland v Newcastle

The new manager bounce has been very kind to Sunderland in this fixture over the last few years, and while it causes a lot of instability, it has worked for The Black Cats when it comes to winning the Tyne-Wear derby. They have managed to record the double over their north-east rivals for the last two seasons running.

The record for the most consecutive wins in this fixture is five, which Newcastle achieved between 2002-06, but Sunderland are currently on a winning run that matches that total.

A victory on the weekend would give them the record, and with Sam Allardyce surely eager to get his first win with his new team, as well as the spectre of his short stint at St. James' Park still somewhere in the back of his mind, you'd be hard pushed to bet against them.

Liverpool v Southampton

Liverpool's transfer committee will surely be watching on with interest as Southampton visit Anfield, as they have been regularly dipping into the Saints' team to make a signing...or four.

Interestingly, but possibly not surprisingly, the last Southampton player to score a goal against Liverpool (August 2014) now plays for Klopp's men: Nathaniel Clyne.

West Ham v Chelsea

Chelsea's current run in all competitions is not very good, and West Ham have been up and down at best, so while at the start of the season this London derby would have been marked down as a win for Mourinho's side, things are proving more difficult to predict than ever in these last few weeks.

When playing away from home, West Ham are still unbeaten, but their record at Upton Park is much worse, having only secured one win in their four games there.

Chelsea's normally mean defence is definitely more generous this year, and their only clean sheets in the league have come at home. On the road, they have conceded 10 goals in four games.

Slaven Bilic's side are not much better and have conceded an average of two a game in their home matches in the league, which suggests that there may well be goals at both ends in this game, in particular if Dimitri Payet continues to create plenty of chances.
