The Boot Room: Alan McLoughlin

It was the goal that sent the Republic of Ireland to USA 1994.

In November 1993, Jack Charlton's Republic of Ireland made the short trip up to Belfast, for a game that would decide their place at the following year's World Cup finals.

Not only was the meeting between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland crucial in terms of World Cup qualification, but it was also played at the height of the Troubles, more than four years before the Good Friday Agreement.

Jack Charlton's side battled to a 1-1 draw at Windsor Park, and with results elsewhere, it was enough to send them to the following year's World Cup in the states, the third major tournament from four they had reached in the Charlton years.

The goalscoring hero that night was Alan McLoughlin, who came off the bench to volley in the equaliser, after Jimmy Quinn had given Northern Ireland the lead.

McLoughlin joined Philip Egan on the Boot Room on Premier League Live with Sky Sports yesterday, to look back on his first international goal, on that famous night in Belfast.
