The K Club announced as the 2016 Irish Open host

The Irish Open received a boost this morning with news that the tournament is to be held at The K Club next year on the tenth anniversary of its hosting of the Ryder Cup.

The announcement was made by Rory McIlroy, who confirmed The Rory Foundation will host the event until 2018, with Dubai Duty Free continuing to act as sponsors. The three year deal follows the success of the Irish Open earlier this year in Royal County Down which McIlroy hosted for the first time.

The K Club was a regular stop on the European Tour when it was host of the European Open. It last hosted the event in 2007.

The prize money for next years tournament has also increased by 60%. While the first prize is not know, there will be a €4million prize fund at the Kildare venue.

Soren Kjeldsen won the tournament earlier this year, beating Eddie Pepperell and Bernd Weisberger in a playoff. Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke was Ireland's best finisher in a tie for 28th place.
