The Kick Off: Clare and Dublin withdraw from the camogie championship

GAELIC GAMES

Dublin and Clare have both withdrawn from the camogie championship ahead of the controversial coin toss to decide which of the two sides would progress Camogie Championship quarter finals.

The draw was set to go ahead this morning, but both sides took action and announced that they would not be taking part in the draw after expressing their disappointment at the decision

In other GAA news, Brian Cuthbert is to step down as Cork Senior Football manager.

The Examiner are this morning reporting that Cuthbert won't seek a third year in charge following last week's eight-point defeat to Kildare in round 4 of the qualifiers.

Cork finished top of Division One this year, but lost heavily to Dublin in the League final.

Former Under-21 manager John Cleary is among the early frontrunners to replace Cuthbert, as is ex-Nemo Rangers coach Ephie Fitzgerald.

 

RACING

Day three of the Galway Festival features the tote.com Galway Plate.

The Grade A Handicap Chase has over 130-thousand euro on offer to the winner, with a sprawling 22-strong field.

That's off at 5.30, with the first of a mixed eight-race card going to post at 3.

Elsewhere, it's the second day of Glorious Goodwood today, where over half-a-million pounds is on the line for the winner of today's feature, the Qatar Sussex Stakes.

 

SOCCER

Celtic will be hoping to take a major step towards a place in the Champions League group stages this evening.

They take on Qarabag of Azerbaijan at Parkhead in the first leg of the third qualifying round.

Kick-off at Parkhead is at 7:45.

Among the other clubs in action tonight across Europe with be Dutch giants Ajax, who have traveled to Austria to face Rapid Vienna.

 

RUGBY

The Ireland squad hold another open training session today - this time, in Cork.

Irish Independent Park hosts the workout from around 10.30 this morning, with Cian Healy's level of involvement likely to be the focus of attention.

The IRFU have refused to comment on claims the Leinster prop's recuperation from neck surgery is taking longer than expected.

 

CRICKET

The third Ashes test gets underway at Edgbaston this morning.

Australia tied the series at 1 apiece following a heavy defeat of England at Lord's last time out.
