The League of Ireland gets ready for its mid season break

The last series of matches in the SSE Airtricity League before the mid-season break takes place on Friday night with a full programme in both divisions.

The television cameras will be at Dalymount Park for the meeting of those great Dublin rivals Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers and it’s fitting that they should be paired against other in the week that the great Johnny Fullam, who won league and cup medals with both clubs. A minute’s applause in appreciation of a wonderful player will take place before kick-off.

It’s the third time in a week that Bohemians face top five opposition and, after last Friday’s high when they became the first team this season to beat league leaders Dundalk, Bohs came crashing back to earth on Tuesday night when they were beaten by St Patrick’s Athletic. Rovers have also played twice in the past week and finally discovered their shooting boots as they recorded a 5-1 win over Sligo Rovers and a 4-1 victory over Derry City both at Tallaght Stadium.

Both Dundalk and Sligo Rovers will be looking to bounce back from those defeats last Friday when they face each other at the Showgrounds with the chasing pack hoping that Sligo can do them a favour and allow them to reduce the Lilywhites’ three point lead at the top going into the break.

Second place Cork City will be going for their fifth win in six league games when they play second from bottom Bray Wanderers whose unbeaten run since the arrival of new boss Trevor Croly was ended last week by Longford Town. There is a gap of nine points between the top five and the other seven clubs in the Premier Division and it’s the Midlanders who are chasing down the breakaway group after a steady start to the season. Longford’s six defeats this season have all been against top five teams so they will be looking to put more points on the board when they face eighth place Galway United at City Calling Stadium.

Back to back wins over the weekend have moved St Patrick’s Athletic up to fourth and they will look to consolidate that position when they host bottom of the table Limerick who are still searching for their first league win of the season. The final Premier Division game of the evening sees Derry City, who have picked up just two points from their last seven games, travel to United Park to face a Drogheda United side with three wins from their last four league games.

First Division leaders Finn Harps also suffered their first league defeat of the season last week in Athlone and could relinquish top spot on Friday night if results go against them. They are at home to third place Wexford Youths while second place UCD, who lie three points adrift of the Donegal side, are away to a Waterford United side languishing at the wrong end of the table having lost six of their last seven games.

Elsewhere, bottom side Cabinteely host Athlone Town while Shelbourne, with four wins from their last five games, are at home to Cobh Ramblers.

The SSE Airtricity League Mid-Season Break will take place from Saturday, June 13 to Thursday, June 25 (inclusive) and there will be no fixtures during this period. The SSE Airtricity League will resume on Friday, June 26.
