The misadventures of Robert Allenby may be set to add another chapter

There's something curious about Robert Allenby.

Last week, he sacked his caddie, Mick Middlemo, midway through the opening round of the RBC Canadian Open after the pair shared a heated exchange.

This would be an unusual incident for any professional golfer and may upset their round or to a further extent, affect their participation in a tournament.

Not for Robert Allenby.

Instead, he turned to a spectator in his time of need and an everyday school principal, Tom Fraser, took the reigns.

For the fan, this was a once in a lifetime experience. For Allenby, this was turning into a regular occurrence.

In fact, this was the third time a caddie he had worked with walked off during a round of golf.

In 2007, Matthew Tritton stormed off during a round of the BMW Open near Chicago and previous to that another of his caddie's had walked off during the 1995 British Open at St Andrews.

The reason for storming off the course was unclear because both men had separate accounts, but Middlemo claims that Allenby had hurled personal insults at him, one of which he claims to be "a fat c**t".

Grotesque, most certainly. This is where the story takes a more bizzare turn.

Middlemo is now also claiming that the golfer's recollection of being drugged, beaten, kidnapped and robbed is fabricated.

Speaking to News Corp Australia, he said: “Do I think he got mugged and bashed and absolutely robbed? No I don’t.

“That’s the story I told because that’s the story he told me to tell because I wasn’t there.

“Do I think he just fell over and cracked his head? Honestly I do. I think he fell over and someone picked up his wallet and had a great time with his credit card.”

Middlemo gave a further insight into the character of the man, claiming that Allenby is one of the most unpleasant golfers on the tour.

"The way he talks to people on the golf course is mind-boggling. To marshals, volunteers,” he said.

Hopefully the news will distract from the fact he's missed the cut in half of his last six events and the last tournament that he actually completed (the St. Judes Classic) in mid-June, he tied 64th.

He has withdrawn from his last two consecutive events.
