The pros and cons if Klopp and Man City team up

One year it was Mario Gotze. The next it was Robert Lewandowski. And now, finally and unfortunately (if you enjoyed Borussia Dortmund's rise), it is Jurgen Klopp's turn to leave the Bundesliga club behind.

The German manager announced his decision to depart after seven trophy-filled and ultra-successful years in charge.

And as soon as any top level European coach becomes available, he is immediately linked to a Premier League.

With Louis van Gaal making his mark at Manchester United, Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger secure at Chelsea and Arsenal, and Brendan Rodgers unlikely to be sacked this summer, the main link between Klopp and England has been Manchester City, where Manuel Pellegrini is under significant pressure.

Although, reports suggest that City will pass on Klopp to either give Pellegrini one more year until they can (try to) get hold of Pep Guardiola or look elsewhere, the Etihad seems to be the only potential vacancy for a manager of the former Mainz boss' standing.

But as always there are pros and cons when it comes to City.

In some ways, this summer might be the right time to join the club. City are likely to begin a major squad overhaul which could give Klopp an opportunity to stamp his authority on the playing style.

Based on his Dortmund work, the German favours high energy, counter-attacking football, which is not what the Sky Blues have been associated with. They have gone for a more patient, passing approach in recent years.

But if more lethargic players like Yaya Toure are moved on and targets more suited to his game-plan are signed, there is potential to revolutionise the style.

He should also have the immediate respect of the players, given his achievements, charisma, Champions League experience and status within the modern game.

There is an if there, of course. How much say Klopp would have on transfer strategy would be open to question, given that chief executive Ferran Soriano and director of football Txiki Begiristain have a major say over transfer strategy - and arrived at City from Barcelona where the philosophy was quite different to Klopp's vision? And particularly when the suggestions are that the duo's ultimate goal is to attract Guardiola to Manchester when his contract expires.

In another way though, Klopp could be the best man to maximise City's transfer budget under the shadow of Financial Fair Play.

The 47-year-old took Dortmund from mediocrity to a European Cup final and Bundesliga titles with young players and without throwing vast sums of money at the problem, which is what City need in a squad overhaul tempered by the restrictions of FFP.

But immediate success would not be a given when changes are made in a short space of time and patience - or a lack of it - could be the sticking point if City's backers are not of a mind to take their time.

But from a neutral perspective, Klopp is the type of character who would be a welcome presence in the Premier League.
