'The racism in sport, is more impactful than the racism in life'

As part of the Off the Ball Roadshow in Vicar St tonight, Joe was joined on stage by Liverpool and England legend John Barnes, thanks to Carlsberg's Join The Greats campaign.

Despite his footballing heroics, Barnes is known globally for his part in the famous song World in Motion. He speaks about how the players how took part in the song missed out on a financial fortune by deciding to take a small lump sum for their participation in the song compared to getting a percentage of royalties.

He speaks very eloquently about the racism he received throughout his career from fans in England. Famously after scoring against Brazil in the Maracana in 1984, Barnes was racially abused on the plane back to England by members of the National Front. He also talks about receiving hate mail from fans throughout England when playing for Watford.

Barnes joined Liverpool in 1987 and was signed by Graeme Souness and made over 400 appearances for the side winning two league titles and two FA Cups.

He described it as "a humble club" and compares the Liverpool of the late 1980's to present day Barcelona. Barnes mentioned how "you would die for your team mate" even though many of the players did not get on.

The striker joined at the end of the clubs golden era and says Graeme Souness' methods in the early 1990's were "neccessary" to modernise the club but he did "too much, too quickly".

Speaking at Vicar St, he claimed the Bosman ruling made players like Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman join the first team at a quicker rate than may have been previously needed and meant the squad of the early 90's became younger than previous sides.

He speaks about his Liverpool side missing out on European competition due to the Heysel Disaster and feels the side of the late 80's may have won a European Cup.

Despite spells at Celtic, Jamaica and Tranmere, Barnes hope to return to management and be given an opportunity to make an impact.

Listen to John Barnes speak about his time at Liverpool FC, the legacy of World in Motion and much more:
