Thomas Muller claims that Irish "play-acting" was to blame for Germany's loss

Thomas Muller believes that the German side who slumped to a shock defeat against Ireland during the week didn't play badly, and that "play-acting" from the Boys in Green didn't help their cause.

The now famous Shane Long goal against Germany on Thursday night is one that will live long in the memory of every Irish fan, but the shock defeat has brought its own problems for the world champions.

Having expected to walk out of the Aviva with three points in the bag, coach Joachim Löw described the defeat as "unnecessary", before adding that Ireland's insistence on playing long ball all the time had reaped its rewards with one mistake costing them the game.

Speaking to reporters in the wake of the loss, Thomas Muller echoed those sentiments, saying that he and his team had not played badly, but he also placed some of the blame for the loss on what Ireland's players were up to.

"Ireland only defended and played long balls. We had decent chances and gave nothing away.

"In the end we wasted too many chances and conceded an unnecessary goal after a mistake, coupled with a lot of play-acting and a weak referee".

Those comments are unlikely to win him any more Irish fans, but one German player's great gesture for the family of a Berkeley victim has probably had the opposite effect.
