Tiger charges through back nine to give him fighting chance in Virginia

Tiger Woods' late rally saw him burst into contention at the Quicken Loans Championship in Virginia, a strong back nine to thank for an opening round 68.

He opened the day with what we have come to know as trademark Woods: three over after four holes and looking on course to endure another miserable round.

But the 14-time major winner fought back picking up shots on holes five and eight, really shifting up a gear heading for the turn.

He opened the back nine with a birdie and continued with purpose, carding another three in succession to take him to three under heading into the last five holes.

The momentum slowed but Woods held his nerve and finished the back nine bogey-free to finish on three under.

"That's what scoring is all about,'' Woods said.

"I made a lot of key putts today. I ran them by the hole but I made all the comebacks. Overall I felt like I hit the ball well enough to turn it around. It was nice to actually turn it around.''

Elsewhere in the field, defending champion Justin Rose kicked off the tournament to card an impressive five-under 66.

The 35-year-old shot eight birdies and three bogeys to finish three strokes behind early pace setters Retief Goosen and  Ryo Ishikawa.

The 2013 US Open champion bogeyed the second before picking up three consecutive birdies, the bulk of the five birdies picked up on the front nine.

He bogeyed the final hole to sit three adrift on five under and alongside compatriot Greg Owens.

South African Goosen enjoyed a spellbinding opening round, a bogey free card and eight birdies enough to give the veteran a share of the lead on 63.

Ishikawa was another strong finisher, picking up five birdies to complete his round and included a career second ace on the 178-yard fourth.

His only other hole in one came at the 2013 Puerto Rico Open.
