Title Race Still Alive As Cork Fail To Beat Bohemians

Bohemians 0-0 Cork City

SSE Airtricity League Premier Division

By Jamie Moore at Dalymount Park

Cork City's wait for the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division title will go on until Monday at least.

It's after they drew 0-0 with Bohemians at Dalymount Park and Dundalk beat Bray 1-0 at Oriel Park thanks to Michael Duffy's 87th minute winner.

It means that Cork are six points clear at the top.

They have three matches to play, starting with a home game against Derry on Monday.

Dundalk have two matches to play but their goal difference is three better than Cork.

City need just one point from their final three games to clinch their first league title since 2005.

Report

The only event of the poor first-half came in the 17th minute when Cork were denied a penalty by referee Rob Harvey.

Greg Bolger’s perfect through ball sent Karl Sheppard racing towards goal, Bohs’ goalkeeper Shane Supple came out and tripped Sheppard in the box, no penalty said the ref, despite Cork’s fierce protests.

Whatever Keith Long and Trevor Croly said at the break fired the home team into action, they dominated the opening 25 minutes of the second period and should have won the game.

Paddy Kavanagh’s deflected effort was saved by Mark McNulty then Derek Pender’s shot was blocked away by the legs of the Cork ‘keeper.

Philly Gannon’s attempt was then blocked as Bohs pushed for the opener,

Those chances were all in the space of a minute

Shane Griffin’s block then stopped a certain Izzy Akinade goal as the home side continued to dominate.

In an effort to stem to flow, Cork made a defensive change replacing the skilful Kieran Sadlier with Conor McCarthy. Jimmy Keohane moved to the right of midfield with McCarthy at right-back.

The change worked in terms of stopping Bohs’ dominance but they should have again taken the lead in the 70th minute.

Dinny Corcoran is a man who usually takes his chances, but he headed Paddy’s Kavanagh’s cross wide with the goal almost at his mercy.

Dylan Hayes’ shot was then tipped around the post by McNulty, who was a busy man.

The Cork manager cut a frustrated figure on the sideline.

Their wait for the title goes on, for Bohs, they'll be playing Premier Division football again next season as that point means they will not be relegated.
